surface mount technology work information

Solderers and Brazers - Braze or solder together components to assemble fabricated metal parts, using soldering iron, torch, or welding machine and flux. This information is based on O*NET™ data. O*NET is a trademark registered to the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration. [ Top | Bottom ] Detailed Job Description Welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers weld or join metal parts. They also fill holes, indentions, or seams of metal products, using hand-held metal joining equipment. Duties Welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers typically do the following: • Study blueprints, sketches, or specifications • Calculate dimensions to be welded • Inspect structures or materials to be welded • Ignite torches or start power supplies • Monitor the welding process to avoid overheating • Maintain equipment and machinery Welding is the most common way of permanently joining metal parts. In this process, heat is applied to metal pieces, melting and fusing them to form a permanent bond. Because of its strength, welding is used in shipbuilding, automobile manufacturing and repair, aerospace applications, and thousands of other manufacturing activities. Welding also is used to join steel beams in the construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures and to join pipes in pipelines, powerplants, and refineries. Welders work in a wide variety of industries, from car racing to manufacturing. The work that welders do and the equipment they use vary with the industry. Arc welding, the most common type of welding today, uses electrical currents to create heat and bond metals together—but there are more than 100 different processes that a welder can use. The type of weld normally is determined by the types of metals being joined and the conditions under which the welding is to take place. Cutters use heat to cut and trim metal objects to specific dimensions. The work of arc, plasma, and oxy–gas cutters is closely related to that of welders. However, instead of joining metals, cutters use the heat from an electric arc, a stream of ionized gas called plasma, or burning gases to cut and trim metal objects to specific dimensions. Cutters also dismantle large objects, such as ships, railroad cars, automobiles, buildings, and aircraft. Some operate and monitor cutting machines similar to those used by welding machine operators. Solderers and brazers also use heat to join two or more metal objects together. Soldering and brazing are similar, except that the temperature used to melt the filler metal is lower in soldering. Soldering uses metals with a melting point below 840 degrees Fahrenheit. Brazing uses metals with a higher melting point. Soldering and brazing workers use molten metal to join two pieces of metal. However, the metal added during the soldering or brazing process has a melting point lower than that of the piece, so only the added metal is melted, not the piece. Therefore, these processes normally do not create distortions or weaknesses in the piece, as can occur with welding. Soldering commonly is used to make electrical and electronic circuit boards, such as computer chips. Soldering workers tend to work with small pieces that must be positioned precisely. Brazing often is used to connect cast iron and thinner metals that the higher temperatures of welding would warp. Brazing also can be used to apply coatings to parts in order to reduce wear and protect against corrosion. Welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers weld or join metal parts. They also fill holes, indentions, or seams of metal products, using hand-held metal joining equipment. Welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers may work outdoors, often in inclement weather, or indoors, sometimes in a confined area. They may work on a scaffold, high off the ground, and they occasionally must lift heavy objects and work in awkward positions. Although most work full time, overtime is common. Training for welding, cutting, soldering, and brazing workers varies. Training ranges from a few weeks of technical school or on-the-job training to several years of combined technical school and on-the job training. The median annual wage for welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers was $36,300 in May 2012. Employment of welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers is projected to grow 6 percent from 2012 to 2022, slower than the average for all occupations. Despite slower-than-average employment growth, skilled welders with up-to-date training should have good job opportunities. Compare the job duties, education, job growth, and pay of welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers with similar occupations. Successful processing of your claim, including timely payment of benefits when eligible, depends on your following these 2 Important Steps:

Important Step #1Begin documenting your work search efforts immediately. You must keep a written record of all work search contacts for review by DES. Your work search contacts may be recorded on Form NCUI 506E, Work Search Record* (or other paper if you are unable to download the form). Regardless of the form, you must document the information listed below for each of your contacts for each week that you claim.

  1. Date of Contact

  2. Employer's Name and Address

  3. Contact Method (in person, resume, telephone, etc.)

  4. Type work applied for

  5. Results (application accepted, hired, will call, pending, etc.)

*NCUI506E is a PDF file and requires a PDF reader to view. If your computer does not have a reader installed, opens a new browser windowAdobe Acrobat Reader can be downloaded for free. Please follow the download instructions at Adobe's website.
Important Step #2 File your weekly certification as soon as possible after each week for which you wish to claim unemployment. If you file your weekly certification more than 28 days after the week-ending date, you may be ineligible for payment for that week. N.C. unemployment benefits are claimed on a calendar week basis (Sunday through Saturday), and your claim is effective on the Sunday of the week in which you filed a new or reopened claim (if you filed on Sunday, your claim is effective that day). Your first weekly certification will be for the 7 day period ending at midnight of the first Saturday after the effective date. DES encourages you to file online. To file your weekly claim online, simply go to ncesc.com, select File Weekly Certification, log-in with your User ID (Social Security number) and PIN, and follow the simple instructions on each page.

You may also file your weekly certification by calling 1-888-372-3453. This is a Voice Automated System that you can say your answers over the phone.

You may check for Jobs or do payment inquiry on the JOBSLINE at 1-800-768-5627.

Your initial claim will be processed at the DES Remote Services Center. If you need to contact the DES Remote Services Center, please see the directions below. Please do not call the Remote Services Center today, because your claim needs to undergo overnight processing before the consultants in the DES Remote Services Center can assist you.
